Did you know… the Philippines may be named the World’s Leading Dive Destination for an incredible *fifth* year in a row?

Did you know, the Philippines has been named the World’s Leading Dive Destination for the last four years in a row, according to the travel industry’s most prestigious awards?

Not only that but in just over a month we will learn whether our beautiful islands have been named the best place to dive on earth for an incredible fifth consecutive year.

Last month the Philippines once again took home the crown as Asia’s Leading Dive Destination – for the fifth straight year – beating the popular diving destinations of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand to take home the title.

This makes the Philippines eligible to vie for the World title, the winner of which will be revealed at a gala ceremony in Dubai on December 1 at the World Travel Awards.

The shortlist reads – as you would imagine – as a dream bucket list of the most incredible places you could possibly imagine diving. The nominees are…

  • The Azores
  • Belize
  • The Cayman Islands
  • Fiji
  • The Galapagos Islands
  • The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • The Maldives
  • Mexico
  • The Philippines
  • St. Kitts
  • Tahiti

So against such incredible competition it seems hard to believe the Philippines could possibly win out again, but it seems to keep happening!

Founded in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognizes brands and organisations worldwide from the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries through its annual gala ceremonies held in each continent.

Last year upon winning the fourth consecutive World’s Leading Dive Destination award, the PHilippines’ Secretary of Tourism Christina Frasco said: “These awards are a source of inspiration for us in the Department of Tourism to work even harder… As we anticipate the influx of more tourists, we shall continue the work to improve the overall tourist experience in the Philippines, and herald the best of the Filipino brand to the world.

The department statement added: “The Philippine dive portfolio continues its four-year winning streak for the World’s Leading Dive Destination title as it lorded over the world’s finest diving destinations.”

In 2022, the Philippines bagged the top spot against fierce competition from the Azores, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, the Galapagos, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, Mexico and St. Kitts.

Incredibly that followed victory the previous year over the Azores, Bora Bora, the Caymans, Fiji, the Galapagos, the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives and Mexico.

The Philippines won World’s Leading Dive Destination awards at the World Travel Awards in 2019, 2020, 2021, and again in 2022. We were named Asia’ Leading Dive Destination in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The Philippines is also the reigning World’s Leading Beach Destination, having won in 2022, and has been named Asia’s Leading Beach Destination six times in ten years.

And only earlier this month, Puerto Galera was officially named the Diving Capital of the Philippines, for the variety, quality, proximity, visibility and abundant biodiversity of its dive sites.

We sat down with the woman who has been at LLV Divers since it all began – IDC Staff Instructor Ja Atienza – to talk teaching, turtles, and triggerfish.
“My favourite thing to see is turtles! I’m not only happy when I see them, I want to see the look in the face of my divers when they see the sea turtles. Every time, even if it’s every day or every dive, I am still happy to see them.”

Down to the Dive Site: West Escarceo

A classic Puerto Galera dive site, West Escarceo has a split personality depending on the moon and the tides. Will you be whipped along weightlessly, flying past boulders, critters, and schools of fish, or will you enjoy a sedate and gentle exploration of the minutiae of the Verde Island Passage’s incredible underwater life? Only the current will tell…
