How to Choose a Dive Centre in Puerto Galera
Puerto Galera is one of the Philippines’ most celebrated diving destinations, with colourful coral reefs, dramatic drop-offs, historic wrecks, exhilarating drift dives and exceptional marine life.
There are many dive centres to choose from, and it can be tempting to compare them based only on the advertised price of a dive. However, prices do not always reflect the same group sizes, safety standards, equipment, staffing or level of service.
The dive centre you choose can have a major effect on your comfort, safety and overall enjoyment. Before booking, it is worth looking beyond the headline price and understanding exactly what you will receive.
Here are the most important things to consider when choosing a dive centre in Puerto Galera.
1. Ask How Many Divers Will Be in Your Group

One of the most important questions to ask is:
How many divers will be assigned to each guide?
Group sizes can vary significantly between dive operators. Some local operators may assign between 8 and 16 divers to a single guide.
Larger groups can mean more time waiting, greater differences in air consumption and experience levels, and less individual attention from the guide. They can also make it more difficult for the group to remain together, particularly in strong currents or areas with busy boat traffic.
At LLV Divers, we limit guided recreational diving to a maximum of four divers per guide.
A maximum 4:1 ratio means:
- > The guide can pay closer attention to each diver
- > Communication is easier above and below the water
- > Groups can be matched more closely by experience and comfort
- > There is less waiting for a large group to enter or exit the water
- > The dive can be paced more appropriately
- > Marine life encounters are less crowded
- > Photographers have more space and time to capture images
For many guests, a smaller group is one of the biggest differences between an ordinary dive and an exceptional one.
2. Check the Size of Dive Courses

Group size is equally important when learning to dive or completing further training.
PADI standards may allow an instructor to teach as many as eight students under appropriate conditions. At LLV Divers, our courses are limited to a maximum of two students per instructor.
A maximum 2:1 course ratio gives students more direct coaching, more time to practise and more opportunities to repeat skills until they feel comfortable.
It also allows the instructor to identify and correct problems earlier. Students can progress at a pace that suits them instead of feeling pressured to keep up with a large class.
Our objective is not simply to complete the required course exercises. We want to give every student the personal instruction, confidence and practical ability needed to become the best diver they can be.
LLV Divers is a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Resort, with an in-house Course Director, experienced Staff Instructors and a team of full-time dive professionals.
3. Look Carefully at Safety Standards
Safety should be a central part of every dive operation—not something considered only when an emergency occurs.
When comparing dive centres, ask:
- > Is emergency oxygen carried on every boat?
- > Is there a first-aid kit on every boat?
- > Are staff regularly trained in emergency response?
- > Is an automated external defibrillator available?
- > How close is the nearest hyperbaric chamber?
- > Does the dive centre have clear check-in and check-dive procedures?
- > Is the dive centre willing to explain its safety systems?
LLV Divers has maintained a 100% safety record.
Every LLV Divers boat carries emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit. Our staff receive regular Emergency First Response training, and an AED is available on-site at Lalaguna Villas.
A local hyperbaric chamber is also available approximately five minutes from the resort.
These resources do not replace careful planning and professional supervision, but they demonstrate that emergency preparedness is taken seriously.

4. Expect a Check Dive
Every diver has different experience, recent diving history, air consumption, buoyancy control and comfort in the water.
At LLV Divers, every guest completes a check dive as their first dive with us, regardless of their certification level or total number of logged dives.
The check dive is not designed to test or embarrass anyone. It gives our team an opportunity to understand how comfortable each guest is in the water and whether any assistance may be helpful.
It also allows us, as far as possible, to group divers with others of a similar experience and ability. Better-matched groups usually result in more relaxed, enjoyable and appropriately paced dives for everyone.

6. Inspect the Dive Centre Itself
One of the simplest ways to assess a dive operation is to look at its premises.
Is the dive centre clean, tidy and organised? Does it appear well maintained? Is the rental equipment stored correctly? Are the boats and working areas cared for?
The appearance of a dive shop does not tell you everything, but it can provide a useful indication of the operator’s attitude towards maintenance, organisation and professional standards.
If the premises are neglected, untidy or poorly maintained, it is reasonable to ask how the same operator manages its rental equipment and safety-critical systems.
A professional dive centre should be comfortable showing guests its facilities and explaining how its equipment is maintained.

7. Ask Who Services the Rental Equipment
Rental equipment must be inspected and serviced correctly. Divers should ask who is responsible for maintaining regulators, buoyancy-control devices and other rental equipment.
Lalaguna Villas owns LLV Divers Store, the only authorised Scubapro dealer and service centre in the area.
Our service centre maintains our equipment, and many other local dive shops also use our facility to service their rental equipment.
LLV Divers provides Scubapro rental equipment, with Shearwater dive computers also available. Please note that rental equipment is charged separately from the dive price, so guests using their own equipment are not required to pay for equipment they do not need.
8. Understand What Valet Diving Includes

A professional valet diving service should involve more than simply carrying a tank to the boat.
At LLV Divers, our dive team takes care of the practical details so guests can concentrate on enjoying their diving.
Once the team understands how you prefer your equipment to be configured, you can expect it to be assembled and ready for you on the boat each time you dive.
Our team assists with equipment handling and preparation before and after the dive. When you surface and return to the boat, a hot towel is also provided.
For guests completing several dives during their stay, this service makes each diving day easier, more comfortable and more relaxing.
9. Compare Access to the Dive Sites
Puerto Galera has more than 35 dive sites, many of which can be reached from Lalaguna Villas in approximately five to eight minutes.
Shorter boat journeys mean less time travelling and more time enjoying the diving and resort.
LLV Divers offers scheduled dives at:
- 8:00 am
- 10:30 am
- 1:30 pm
- 3:30 pm
- 6:00 pm night dive
Sunrise dives and a 5:30 pm Mandarin Dusk Dive may also be available, subject to conditions and the operating schedule.
The Mandarin Dusk Dive gives guests an alternative to a traditional night dive and the opportunity to look for one of Puerto Galera’s most fascinating underwater courtship displays.
10. Ask How Verde Island Trips Operate

Verde Island is widely regarded as one of the Philippines’ most exciting diving areas, with spectacular reefs, strong currents and an extraordinary concentration of marine life.
However, operators can differ considerably in how they arrange their Verde Island trips.
Many local dive shops require approximately 10 to 16 divers before confirming a trip. LLV Divers can operate Verde Island excursions with smaller groups of approximately four to six divers.
Our speedboats can reach Verde Island in around 20 minutes, with our fastest recorded crossing taking just 16 minutes. Many other operators take approximately one to one and a half hours to reach the island.
A faster journey means less time travelling, a more comfortable boat ride and more time available for diving and relaxing.
We normally operate three to five Verde Island trips each week, depending on demand, sea conditions and the diving schedule. Two-dive and three-dive options are available, with the three-dive excursion including a beach barbecue.
11. Look at the Facilities Available Between Dives
The facilities surrounding the diving operation can make a considerable difference, particularly for students, underwater photographers and guests completing multiple dives.

Lalaguna Villas and LLV Divers provides:
- > Fully air-conditioned classrooms
- > An air-conditioned camera room
- > Dedicated facilities for underwater photographers
- > Comfortable resort facilities between dives
- > A beachfront location
- > Restaurant, bar and room service available 24 hours
- > A swimming pool and gym available 24 hours
An air-conditioned camera room is particularly valuable in a tropical environment, giving photographers a more comfortable and controlled space in which to prepare, check and maintain their equipment.
Why Dive Prices Should Not Be Compared on Price Alone
The lowest advertised dive price is not necessarily the best overall value.
Before deciding, compare:
- > The maximum number of divers assigned to each guide
- > The maximum number of students assigned to each instructor
- > The experience and employment status of the staff
- > The condition and maintenance of the dive centre
- > The quality and servicing of the rental equipment
- > Emergency equipment carried on the boats
- > Check-dive and diver-grouping procedures
- > Boat quality and journey times
- > The accessibility of Verde Island
- > What is included in the valet diving service
- > The facilities available before, between and after dives
A slightly higher price may represent substantially more personal attention, better facilities, shorter journeys, smaller groups and a more professionally managed experience.
Questions to Ask Before Booking a Puerto Galera Dive Centre
Before making a reservation, consider asking the dive centre the following questions:
- What is your maximum guide-to-diver ratio?
- What is your maximum instructor-to-student ratio?
- Will I complete a check dive?
- How do you group divers with different experience levels?
- Is emergency oxygen carried on every boat?
- Are first-aid kits available on every boat?
- How often do staff complete emergency-response training?
- Who services the rental equipment?
- What equipment brands are available?
- What does the valet diving service include?
- How long does it take to reach the local dive sites?
- How many divers are required for a Verde Island trip?
- How long does the journey to Verde Island take?
- Are camera and classroom facilities air-conditioned?
- Are rental equipment charges included or separate?
A good dive centre should answer these questions openly and clearly.
